Dr. Sherri Worth DDS Teeth Whitening Services
Dr. Sherri Worth DDS believes regular teeth brushing and flossing are essential for maintaining health, clean teeth. However, brushing and flossing alone doesn’t ensure that teeth will remain vibrant and white over time. In fact, as we age our teeth naturally become a darker color. Additionally, one’s lifestyle has an impact on the color of our teeth, especially with regard to what we eat and drink. Darkly pigmented drinks such as coffee, tea and red wine can darken and damage your teeth. Because of this, many people become embarrassed by the discoloration of their teeth and are looking for a way to have a beautifully white smile.
Teeth whitening helps to reduce yellow or otherwise discolored teeth through a process of applying a concentrated solution to the teeth for a period of time. This solution works into the teeth enamel to transform the surface to a whiter, cleaner looking tooth. There are different teeth whitening methods, some of which are done at an in-office visit to your dentist, while others are made for at-home use. In most cases, the highest quality and quickest results come from professional treatment, in a controlled environment. This allows for the dentist control and isolate the whitening on the teeth with doses of the whitening gel, while using precautionary safety measures to protect your gums.

Teeth Whitening FAQ’s
What kinds of teeth whitening options are there available?
There are a number of different options that patients have for whitening their teeth and the results can vary based upon the individual and their chosen approach. Having said that, the options can be generalized into two main methods.
- Professional whitening from in-office visit
- Do-it-yourself at home with an over-the-counter type solution
How does an in-office visit compare to over-the-counter solutions?
With an in-office visit, you get a higher quality result from trained professionals. It generally starts with an oral examination to determine the overall health of your teeth. If there is any decay or infection in the gums, Dr. Sherri Worth will recommend addressing that before moving on to teeth whitening.
Dr. Sherri Worth offers two professional in-office teeth whitening options:
One hour whitening with Zoom® treatment. This treatment involves applying a strong whitening agent on the exterior of the teeth, and then using a light to activate the whitening agent. The light does not whiten the teeth, it simply activates the solution, which treats the teeth.
Gel bleaching. This is a fairly quick procedure that normally takes about 30 minutes to an hour, which involves treating the teeth with a controlled, but powerful concentration of peroxide gel, which is placed inside custom fitted teeth trays. Prior to applying the gel to the teeth, Dr. Sherri Worth’s dental team will show you a protective solution for the gums to protect your gums and mouth from sensitivity.
There are a number of similar at home teeth bleaching remedies. While these options are generally more cost-effective, they are usually not as effective as what you will receive from an in-office visit. For instance, at home bleaching has mixed results because the composition of the bleach is either too strong and not safe, or too weak to attain optimal results. “Whitening” toothpastes are a popularly marketed solution, which can help with basic oral hygiene. However, most whitening toothpastes are less effective at altering the color of your teeth.
Whitening strips are another popular option, however they are sometimes difficult to use effectively, and have a limited reach as far as how many teeth they can whiten (usually just the front 6).
If you are looking for a better at-home teeth whitening option, Dr. Sherri Worth offers a kit that can be purchased in her Newport Beach office that has prescription-only concentrated gel that is safe to use at home, and provides the most effective at-home results.
How much whiter can my teeth get with whitening?
The answer to this question is quite dependent upon the individual, and cannot be accurately predicted or guaranteed. Results can vary based upon factors such as the condition and health of your teeth, your age, and what remedy you ultimately decide going with. If you choose a professionally handled method, in general teeth can lighten about 5-10 shades.
Is it safe?
Yes, professional teeth whitening is safe and has been used widely throughout the dental industry for many years. Dr. Sherri Worth’s Newport Beach office is careful to use tightly fitted teeth trays, and the appropriate concentration of the solution for whitening the teeth with the take home tray method. The in office method is carefully monitored while the process is taking place to avoid any bleach from irritating the gum tissue.
Does it hurt or are there any side effects?
Teeth bleaching gel can sometimes cause some tooth sensitivity. If individuals have not taken the time to research the options, and use a home remedy that is not well suited for them, they can experience sensitivity on the teeth and gums.
Professional methods take extra measures to prevent most tooth and gum sensitivities, however it is normal to experience some slight sensitivity after your initial visit.
How quickly will I see the results?
Again, results can vary considerably based upon the individual, and the tooth shade at which they begin. For in office Zoom® whitening treatments, the results are immediate. Gel bleaching in using trays can also create dramatic results within just a couple days.
How long do the results last?
The effects of teeth whitening can last for several months. Other factors that influence the longevity of whitening treatments include what you eat and drink, as well as your overall lifestyle. For best results, avoid drinks that can stain your teeth such as coffee, tea and wine. Smoking should also be avoided.
Will whitening work on dentures, caps and veneers?
Almost all whitening treatments are designed using bleaching agents that only work on natural tooth enamel. So in the case of dentures, caps, veneers and bonds, these bleaching agents do not have an impact upon the color of the teeth. However, progress is being made in the dental industry on methods to whiten artificial materials. If you would like to know more about this, talk to Dr. Sherri Worth about the options available to you.
Is whitening appropriate for everyone?
Generally it is not. Dental insurance companies usually reject claims to cover teeth whitening treatments.
Is whitening appropriate for everyone?
While teeth bleaching is safe and effective for most individuals, there are some cases where whitening may not be a suitable solution for an individual. Bleaching is not recommended for:
- Children under 14 years of age
- Pregnant & nursing mothers
- Patients that have an allergy to the peroxide ingredient
- Patients that have unresolved pre-existing medical or periodontal issues
- Patients that have teeth that are severely stained, and need alternate solutions such as veneers.
